My name is Leah, and I’m living my best life in Sweden. Growing up in small town Canada I never planned to be dividing my life between the beautiful vibrant city of Stockholm and the island paradise of Fårö; but sometimes you can’t plan what life has in store for you…
In 2011 I met my husband Jens on a sailing trip with friends and quickly quickly fell in love with the Swedish culture and lifestyle. Quite ironic at the time that I was reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo book don’t you think?
I was able to relocate by the start of 2012 to Stockholm and haven’t looked back, although anyone here can tell you i wear my maple leaf “Canucki” roots proudly and am constantly tweaking our Scandi style with Canadian fundamentals be it Hudson Bay pillows, plants my grandparents had in their garden or baking maple infused treats and goodies.
In 2018 when we had the opportunity to take over Jens beloved family summer retreat on the wind swept island of Fårö I realized a wonderful opportunity.
This was the possibility for us to shape this home for ourselves in our own style. The house and meadows around it could be a canvas for me to explore my passion for style, design and gardening. I could finally take all the magazine cutouts and pins I’d collected over the years and formulate it into a cohesive style that blended our two cultures; what i lovingly refer to as Swe (Swedish) Nucki (Canadian).
Slowly we settled into the main farm house and started to make it our own. Jens mother took over the property 40 years earlier and with two young boys the focus had been functional, not fashionable. Given that it was a summer house minimum effort had been made to upgrade the house over time. It’s where friend and family came for a fun time, not a long time. The house would need renovations and fix ups to modernize it and make it a cozy home all year round.
The land around the house once was a beautiful and well loved garden and it was my vision to take what had become overgrown and unused over the years and invigorate the spaces to build an inviting and welcoming garden oasis and bring life back to the farm yard.
It was through my transplant to Sweden that i found a renewed appreciation for my Canadian heritage and the small town life I had growing up. I started to take more pride in the simple tasks like weeding my kitchen garden or baking a batch of my grandmother’s cookies. Reconnecting with my creativity and finding unique ways to utilize the beautiful spaces we’re fortunate to call home.
I hope to create a space here to share this creativity with all of you. Often days I feel caught in the middle of my two cultures never fulling fitting into one versus the other but there is beauty in the weaving together of the two halves to make one whole and fulfilling life.
I hope you enjoy discovering this Swenucki life along with me!
